THE DOUBLE NECKED GUITAR

In 1990 Mattias Windemo, with the help of a professional guitar builder, specially designed his own double necked guitar. This unique instrument is meant to be played more as a piano than an usual guitar, a method referred to as 'tapping', and both hands are often used simultaneously on the necks of the instrument, rather than having one 'chord' hand and one 'strumming' hand. The opportunities for expression and musical adventures are endless. As Windemo usually prefers, the instrument is tuned in fourths, and D is the lowest pitch.

CHAPMANSTICK

The 'Chapman Stick', designed by Emmet Chapman, has been in production since 1974. This instrument, which is built for 'tapping', can be found in a variety of forms, with a variable number of strings, and many different tuning possbilities. The example that Windemo plays on has 10 strings and is split up into two parts, a bass part and a guitar part. Oddly enough, it's the top five strings that make up the bass part of the instrument, C is the lowest possible pitch and the strings are tuned in fifths. The bottom five strings make up the guitar part of the instrument, and are tuned in fourths with G is the lowest pitch.

GIBSON ES 345

For his more 'conventional' guitar playing, Mattias Windemo has a Gibson ES 345 model from 1984. This guitar has wide, concave frets that are perfect for Windemo's style of playing, and is tuned in fourths with E as the lowest pitch.
